The chapter is talking about human necessary to the idealism that can rule human life organized. And the writer trying explained where is the absolute ideology that effective to rule and curing human suffers and also the way to belief the idealism (religion). In this chapter the writer also explain some profit become a religion follower.
Analysis
In this chapter Muthahhari started his write by statement “manusia tidak bisa menjalani kehidupan yang baik atau mencapai sesuatu yang bermanfaat bagi kemanusiaan dan peradaban manusia, tanpa memiliki keyakinan-keyakinan, ideal-ideal dan keimanan.” He was explain that the urgency of having an ideal or faith for a human life it so important, without it a people will
become uncontrolled and blind when he doing his own life. Without idealism, a people will become an egoist person, and his vision will be depend on his necessity too and don’t care with his environment and society will become his habit. That’s just only the beginning of the worst effect for an egoist person life, and the worst effect is the egoist people wouldn’t know his own main purpose in this life without idealism, so everything what he done is become meaningless, and his life will be like sailing without map and direction.
In this chapter he (Muthahhari) says too the importance having one idealism, not some or combining some idealism thought. To ensure a person that faith totally by his idealism is must be focused into one object (his idealism and thought), and he will become obedient with it. But if we have some idealism or combining it, our idealism will be loose its authority to control us, even we’ll control it and our idealism wouldn’t become idealism again, because we have putting our purpose on it. We must know that our purpose was created by our idealism and not by our purpose we create our idealism, because unorganized purpose will be loose it own point, direction, identity, uncontrollable, and the purpose itself. And the true organizer of our purpose must be our idealism, and the great idealism is religion.
The obedient to our idealism it was impossible to be created, except we have faith (belief) inside our self. We know that inside our self there are two kind of power, bad and good. Bad power was created by our ego and the good one created by our faith to the religion, good and bad for each people is depend on which one from this two kind of power that dominating inside. When faith become higher than ego this people will become a good one, but the problem is how can we create a faith in our self? From this one question, every religions use the big four epistemology method to make us believing them, they use empiric, rationality, narration by the sacred text, and illumination. Each religion always has this four epistemology method, but they have different portion for each method.
Each religion always has one same point teaching, belief to The Most High (God). This teaching is have a purpose, it was to get it own follower faith to A Holly One. From believing to this holly faith a follower will be obedient totally, and only from religion we’ll be get this kind of faith. Now we’ll go back to our discussion that we must have an idealism (religion) first to get our purpose, and the purpose will be added in our self only after giving our totally obedient to the religion. The totally obedient will we have after we had a great faith to The Holly One. After this condition was created, we’ll be see a condition that the follower totally ruled by his idealism (religion). By believing to The Holly One, a follower will do anything that was ordered by His (The Holly One) name and this condition is called as totally obedient.
There are some kinds of difference between a faith that based on religion and based on irreligion faith (psychology, revenge, personal happiness, etc). In the religion faith a follower will be get some kind of concept and perspective about life from religion that to explain reality, so the follower will be accept this kind of explanation without any choice and he must belief it as a part from his faith. It was difference by the situation that created by irreligion faith follower, the concept that created by the follower is depend on his mind and rationality and it was so labile the image of his understanding is depend on the follower knowledge. So the concept and perspective of something for an irreligion follower is inside his mind, and he must be choose it first, he will be using it or not. This differences has give us a reason and explanation, why an obedient religion follower more calm than in irreligion follower? It was caused by their obedient to their own faith, there is no doubt in a religion follower and this condition makes them get their own calmness and satisfaction. But in irreligion faith follower we’ll be look if this world full filled by doubt and unfaithness, this condition was created uncomfortable situation for the follower. We have been looking that so many cases about the doubt of irreligion follower.
Each people was have tendency to the something immaterial and they make it become A Holly One for their selves and it was become the most high and truth from their birth. This condition is pure and unconditioned situation for each person. We can see too our (human) history that give us some image this kind of faith to The Something Great that absolutely immaterial from our ancestor. We know they are pray and worshiping to their Idol or some kind of animism as a symbol for their faith to The Great, these activity was give us a prove that ancient people has know their Great Immaterial as their God even they unintellect person. These reality was give us a prove that every people has a tendency to The Immaterial one from their birth to this world. But the distortion of faith will be giving a wrong direction to expressing it. Necessity to worship The Immaterial was so important even our ancestor can’t be patient waiting for the right was or a savior to teach them how to giving a right servant to The Immaterial, so they make an Idol, worshiping a big tree, giving some present to some places, etc as a symbol to prove their belief an necessary to The Immaterial. This is a prove for the importance of expressing their faith to The Immaterial and this is a natural tendency for each people, so it was impossible in this great century we see some community that deny The Material existence, I think it just an expression their heart said by their sense says. In this situation they will be use The Material that they belief as Great as their Immaterial One (God).
Believing a religion will give some positive effect to the follower, the first effect the happiness to their own life. For a religion follower (an obedient follower), everything that he do is belong to his religion and God, and he beliefs too that his God will protect him and give everything he need and saving him from every difficulties. This condition will give a big effect and calmness to his succession in his life. It will be difference with an irreligion follower, he will become doubt and always have bad suppose for his own faith, because he just have unstable idealism and faith. His judgments will be more have negative values than the positive one, because his judgments was based on unstable idealism, and the bad effect he will be afraid for every activities that he will do become false.
The second effect it was about relation between religion guides in the social activities. Human is a social creatures, but the difference between human and the other creatures is in the tendency. The animal is a social creatures too, but their tendency is based on the natural rule that running in their society so we can say it as instinct. That condition was difference with the situation there running in human society system. The tendency that added in human self is based on their freedom, it means that everything human will do is depend on their want, but this freedom also running in the society system too so it must be a universal rule that ruling social activities. Human can do some false in their life, and by religion rule they will be more controlled and respect the other, because religion is for all human. But it doesn’t mean religion denies personal value for each people, religion just gives a synchronizing between personal and social necessity.
The third effect is about controlling emotional feelings. Human is a multi-dimension creatures, human can trough pass time and space and feel every event that happen even that happened far away from his self. Religion not just rules our physical activities but also our mental aspect too. Sometimes a people feeling sad and happy, by religion we can manage our mental situation, we can get a calmness when we sad by remembering our religion spiritual thought. Religion is a rule that ruling our heart, and from this way religion can be a potion for our mental suffer.
Conclusion
Believing to the God will be giving calmness for whose that belief Him. Believing God it wasn’t enough, because we also need religion to controlling our physical and society activities. Point of rule must be focused on one religion to protect from a doubt.
